Biodiversity loss is a crucial issue. It is an ecological crisis which includes the extinction of species worldwide. The latter phenomenon can be temporary or permanent. Global extinction is driven by human activities, such as habitat alteration, pollution, and overexploitation of resources. According to WWF, since 1970, biodiversity has decreased by 68%. It includes major consequences: extinction of species, a direct threat for our health, a risk for global food security, and a big economic loss (more than 3,600 billion euros).
Mind Maps
brought us the opportunity to brainstorm on biodiversity loss and
find a solution to this issue. It gave us the idea to create a
local solution that includes citizens.
Here is an example of our thought path.
At the beginning of our project we did research on existing
eco-friendly applications:
#climate: an app that suggests you climate-saving
actions
Wildscan: a library of endangered species developed to
serve authorities, especially in Asia
We found that there was one aspect missing that we felt was
important: being able to share the actions we are taking part in
with our friends in the application. This is why we added this
service in our app.
The website shown here depicts the context, target audience,
service offered, benchmarks and references.
It covers the features and functionality regarding the working of
the application and helps in structuring the context.
The wireframe
helped us build the foundation of our application to the final
model. It allowed us to easily navigate between the pages and to
get an idea of the finished application. The wireframe gives a
detailed view of each page with navigation buttons and other
future features of the application.
The mockups give a vision of the final application, ready to use. Mockups also allow you to see all the features of the application with the right colours associated. We used them to put ourselves in the users' shoes and to offer them an easy and efficient application to use. You can give a look at the structure of our mockup just here.
User tests helped us improve our mockups so that the
application offers an overall better userflow. We were then able
to change the design and the main colours of the app as well as
the location of features. You can find the tests
here.
We also added thanks to our feedbacks a section allowing users to
share their activities with their friends and family on social
media, as well as a map to have a better visibility on the actions
in their vicinity.
Our application can become a real social network for
those who want to take part in protecting the environment, prevent
the bad consequences of pollution and help contribute to the
preservation of biodiversity. As a future development, we will
create a feed on the application where you can directly see who
participates in any event.
The major challenge for us is to develop the application by
involving everybody and not only those who already act
for the protection of the environment.
Proworld uses IOS and Android technologies. It also uses the Wi-fi Positioning System for geolocation. We also need to implement a 'Share' button so here is an example of code using JavaScript in order to add the share functionality.
